A stark elegy for the school that changed everything and was forced to close before its time.
The composition is built from hard-edged black and red rectangles (some perfectly horizontal, others sliced at acute angles) floating against a raw, slightly stained white field. These panels feel like fragments of lost posters, torn manifestos, or the last sheets of a banned curriculum. The charcoal shadows that drift across the white are neither accidental nor decorative; but are the smoke still rising from the bonfire.
So Red appears only in disciplined bursts (never bleeding, never sentimental), exactly as the Bauhaus itself used primary colour: as a signal, a warning, a declaration of absolute modernity. Black dominates because black was the colour of closure, of the shutters coming down.
Also At the foot of the canvas the word BAUHAUS is set in a heavy, condensed lettering (the same lettering you would have seen on original 1920s exhibition posters), but here it is as though it has survived fire, exile, and decades of being forgotten and rediscovered.
The painting is not a celebration; it is a memorial. A silent roll-call of the rectangles that once promised a new world, now suspended in the hush of history.
